CHAPTER 10

Adrian

As I stepped into the lobby of the law school and gazed up, the temperature dropped a good twenty degrees. It could’ve been the air conditioning, but I suspected it had more to do with Angelo Conti standing off to the side, glaring at me like I just snatched the last steak off the buffet.

“Hi,” I said, exerting little effort to conceal my frown. “What are you doing here?”

“I called. You didn’t answer.”

That was true. “We have nothing to talk about.”

“I drove all the way here. I think you could spare a few minutes.”

“I have class.”

“I’ll be quick then.” He nodded towards a nearby bench, so we sat.

“I have some concerns about Giada,” he began without delay. “She’s been acting out and disappearing for days at a time.”

“Acting out? She’s twenty-two. Let her live her life in peace. The only concerning thing is how closely you monitor your grown sister’s actions.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, my stomach clenched. Such audacity was Giada’s thing, not mine. I prided myself on controlling my temper and dealing with the ridiculous demands of people in a calm manner.

I braced myself for a look of death from Angelo, but instead, his lips curved into the slightest hint of a smile.

“My father said you offered to follow her last weekend but failed.”

“She had disabled all the tracking devices,” I said, omitting my thoughts on how odd it was that her car, purse, and phone even carried tracking devices for the benefit of her overprotective family.

“Convenient that she did that right after you were told to follow her.”

“If you’re suggesting I gave her a heads up, you’re wrong. I wanted to find out where she was going just as much as your father and you did, maybe more.”

“So it’s just coincidence.” Angelo’s tone fell flat.

“Yes.”

Angelo sighed. “I thought you had a class to get to.”

“I do.” I reached for my backpack. “Are we done here?”

“No. But we would be if you’d just tell me the truth. I have places to be today as well, and I don’t appreciate people wasting my time.”

“I don’t know why you’re asking me about her anyway. Giada and I are no longer dating. Her whereabouts are not my concern anymore.”

A sardonic grin crossed his lips. “But that doesn’t change anything between us, does it now?”

“Yes! I want out. I am completely done with your entire family.”

Angelo snickered. “I’m surprised you lasted as long as you did with Giada. She is more than a handful. Can’t imagine she’s worth half the trouble she causes.”

I opened my mouth to say something in defense of Giada but stopped myself. It was not my place to defend her anymore. If I truly wanted out, I needed to stop butting in.

“May I see your phone?”

“No.”

Angelo cocked his head to the side. “I hate to sound cliché, but we can do this the easy way or the hard way, Adrian. The easy way has you headed to class in under two minutes.”

I resisted the urge to ask for specifics on what the hard way entailed.
